Home automation, artificial intelligence and agents: the future of the smart home

I’ve started making YouTube videos, and the first topic could only be the one I’ve been passionate about for years: home automation.

Hardware, software and DIY

If you follow this blog, you know: I’ve spent quite a lot of time taking apart relays, flashing ESPHome and configuring Home Assistant. DIY home automation is a world where hardware and software meet, and where you get to decide how your home should work.

Now the big players are getting into the game too: Apple, Google, LG. That’s a good sign, the market is maturing. But for me the open source approach remains essential, with an eye on security and on data managed locally.

Here come the agents

The part that excites me most is the arrival of AI agents. No longer just “if X happens, do Y” automations, but something that understands context. In the video I talk about practical use cases: the video doorbell that recognizes who’s at the door, package handling, smart locks.

And further down the road? The integration of agents with home robotics. That’s where things get really interesting.

If you want to dig into Apple’s entry into this world, there’s this article (in Italian).

Let me know what you think in the comments on the video (it’s in Italian)!
