Cloned voice scams: a family password to protect yourself

I got a message from a friend: he was at the dentist, couldn’t talk and needed 200 euros.

The attempt

I asked to talk on the phone. It was a scam, and it ended there.

But what if next time the voice really were his? With voice cloning, it takes very little material to reproduce someone’s voice. And fake videos are getting more and more convincing. Imagine a call with a family member’s voice asking you for help.

The password

My solution is as old as time: a password.

The rules are few:

  • you agree on it in person, no chats and no recordings
  • you only use it with the people closest to you
  • every now and then you practice, so you don’t forget it

If someone calls you with a familiar voice and asks for money, ask for the password. If they don’t know it, you have your answer.

In the video I talk about the attempt I received and how I’m putting this idea into practice. Let me know in the comments on the video (it’s in Italian) if you do something similar.
