A bracelet that listens to everything: I'd want one, but only running locally
A bracelet that listens to what I say, transcribes it and prepares a summary for me. Would I want one? Yes. But on one condition.
The usefulness
I can see how useful it would be. I say I need to do something tomorrow and it offers to put it in my calendar. I already use automatic meeting summaries in Meet, and devices like Omi are heading in this direction. Then there are glasses and all the other gadgets on the way.
The alarm bell
Sending all that audio to someone else’s servers, though, sets off a pretty loud alarm bell for me. I’d want a system like this, but I’d only run it locally, transcribing on my own server.
Hooked up to my home automation, locally, it could become genuinely useful: reminders, context, an assistant that becomes proactive because it knows what’s going on.
The uncomfortable part
From here I move on to a more uncomfortable topic. I think these devices are going to spread, and we’ll have to rethink privacy too. My idea is to use information to help each other, without turning it into a weapon against people. Without judgment.
Utopian? Yes, people tell me that. It’s the usual Pandora’s box, somewhere between fear and excitement.
Would you wear one? Answer me under the video (it’s in Italian).
